The Topanga we actually live in.
A quiet guide to the trails we run, the beaches we surf, the food we trust, and the corners we keep close.

Eagle Rock Overlook
a winding ridge path out to canyon panoramas and, on a clear morning, the ocean behind them.
Santa Ynez Waterfall Trail
shaded oak canopy, a seasonal creek, and wildflowers in spring worth timing a trip around.
Trippet Ranch to Ocean Lookout
the long one. A stamina climb that pays out in 360 degrees over Malibu and Santa Monica Bay.
"You can walk from the property straight into Topanga State Park."
The property sits against the park, which means the trailheads are effectively the driveway. What follows is what we actually walk, in the order of how much of your morning you want to give it.
Beaches & Surf
Topanga Beach and the breaks along it are twelve minutes down the canyon — close enough that a dawn patrol and breakfast back up here is an ordinary morning rather than an expedition. Keep going and the whole PCH stretch opens up toward Malibu: tide pools at the north end, better swimming south, and sunsets that are worth the drive on their own.
Store your boards in the common area. Come back sandy; the outdoor shower is there for exactly this.
Food + Drink
Inn of the Seventh Ray — 6 minutes. The canyon institution, and still the right answer for a long dinner.
Waterlily Cafe, Topanga Living Cafe, Cafe Mimosa — 4 to 6 minutes. Morning coffee, in ascending order of how awake you are.
Cafe 27 — 9 minutes.
Nobu and Malibu Farm — 20 minutes. The dinner-in-Malibu half of the whole proposition.
Shops + Makers
Endless Color — 5 minutes.
The shops and galleries along the boulevard — 6 minutes.
Will Geer's Theatricum Botanicum — 8 minutes. Outdoor Shakespeare under the oaks, which is exactly as good as it sounds.
Getty Villa — 20 minutes, for the guest who wants a half-day out of the canyon.
"Topanga Has Always Been A Threshold Place."
Every property in this canyon has a few places that people find on their own and then go back to. Ours are the rose garden early, before anyone else is up. The ridge at the far edge, which holds the last light longer than anywhere else on the property. The creek after rain. And the fig tree, a hundred years old, which was here long before any of the rest of it.
We won't tell you which one is yours. That part tends to sort itself out by the second morning.
